Bishop T.D. Jakes, founder of what is claimed to be one of the US’s largest churches, The Potter’s House, has promised his South African fans an explosive and powerful encounter.
The bishop, whose real name is Thomas Dexter Jakes, landed at Lanseria Airport on Saturday evening in his private jet, accompanied by his wife, Sarita, and his youngest son, Thomas junior.
A multi-billionaire and voted one of the most influential African-Americans in the US, Jakes will appear at the Expo Centre at Nasrec, Johannesburg, this weekend. He will preach a sermon at the Christian revival meeting MegaFest International .
Jakes and his family were greeted at the airport by ululating fans and a performance by members of the Ubuhle Besintu Cultural group.
“I’m not surprised at the hospitality — I’ve experienced it before, many years ago when I visited Soweto,” he said.
Jakes said he hoped his sermon would be attended by people from all over South Africa.
Derrick Williams, The Potter’s House chief of communications, said the event is expected to be a family-oriented fellowship convention.
“We will offer health screenings, HIV counseling and testing, dental care, family and individual counseling, and referral services,” said Williams. “We don’t want to just preach when people have practical needs,” he said.
Local and international gospel heavyweights in the line-up include Bishop John Francis, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Joyous Celebrations, Mtunzi Namba and Benjamin Dube.
Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite-Checkers at R25.
